Synopsis
Crime. Confusion. Compassion. They're all just states of mind.
A withdrawn young man, Leland Fitzgerald is imprisoned for the murder of a mentally disabled boy, who also happened to be the brother of his girlfriend, Becky. As the community struggles to deal with the killing, Pearl Madison, a teacher at the prison, decides to write about Leland's case. Meanwhile, others affected by the murder, including Becky and her sister, Julie, must contend with their own problems.

Pearl Madison: I'm only human, man.
Leland: It's funny how people only say that after they do something bad. I mean, you never hear someone say, "I'm only human" after they rescue a kid from a burning building.
I watched this in my early teen years and remember it being a masterpiece, but this time it really didn’t hit me as hard, while also being a bit messy.
The story follows an autistic teen played by a young Ryan Gosling, who kills a mentally challenged boy and I sent to a juvenile detention center.
The movie has a lot of interesting monologues with some philosophical points and interesting views on the world, but the story was just not that interesting… -
Review by bloodbubb1e ★★★
UNITED STATES OF LELAND is another one of Ryan Gosling’s many psychopath weirdo role in his early filmography. There is no reason to watch this other than for young Gosling and Michelle Williams.
Great cast but unfortunately a very forgettable movie about a mild-mannered teenager who murdered his junkie girlfriend’s mentally challenged kid brother. Failed to conclude satisfactorily or offer a compelling reason as to why the crime was carried out. -
Review by Corey Pierce ★★★ 2
This is one of those movies that was raked over the coals by critics but has a strong following (see RT score vs users here: www.rottentomatoes.com/m/united_states_of_leland/ ) and I can see why. At the start, the main character has killed a disabled boy, and we're left to to wonder why in a way that seems geared more to a specific audience.
Despite a cast that features a young, kinda odd-looking Ryan Gosling, Kevin Spacey, Michelle Williams, Don Cheadle, Jena Malone, they don't really make a mark like you think they would. Mostly everyone is standing around moping and lightly philosophizing. It feels very early 00s sad-bastard indie, and maybe a typical example of a movie that comes across as deeper…

Review by Wesley Stenzel ★★
Feels very indebted to Donnie Darkowithout capturing any of the oddball spirit that made it so charming — it’s just an “edgy” teen asshole spouting pseudo-existentialism without much investigation into any of it, and there’s very little grappling with the actual tragedy at the center of the story. Don Cheadle is superb despite the loss.
